Today I set down and starting thinking to myself, which game should I buy, Nioh (February 9, 2017) or For Honor (February 14, 2017). I will probably buy only one of them because they are vety closed in terms of their release date. Making a decision between the two isn’t easy, because they are both really cool fighting games.
I really love online cooperative and competitive multiplayer games
What I really like about For Honor is that it has a cooperative and competitive multiplayer games modes. Nioh has cooperative multiplayer, but the PvP multiplayer won’t be release on day one (source). For Honor looks like a great multiplayer games where like Overwatch and Battlefield, I can enter the game and enjoy playing some good gameplay sessions before going to bed. Nioh for example is much harder to master, it’s a really difficult game, especially for a newbie like me who don’t play too much of the souls games. I usually enjoy playing more casual games that don’t require me to stay focused 100% of the time.
This is why I enjoy playing Overwatch and Paladins (in closed beta as of the time of writing). For Honor also has 4-vs-4 multiplayer, and I really love the option being able to play with several players on my PS4 and communicate with voice. for me, multiplayer games provide the best gameplay experience, especially if they have competitive aspect and I can play more than 1-vs-1.
Having said that, being a very hard game (at least for beginners like myself) like Nioh is, isn’t actually a bad thing. I really love games that have a high replay value or/and take a long time to finish. I really want a game that I can play a lot and get better in it. I love the looting system and games that rewards you for your great achievements. This why I loved doing raids and strikes in Destiny so much. Playing with friends was the best experience I’ve ever had. Meeting friends online and communicating to achieve a certain goal is just the best experience. After stopping playing Destiny, and now playing a lot of Overwatch, I’m looking forward to the next great game that has a cooperative mode. This is why I put both Nioh and For Honor at the top of the list.
Difficulty and Progression System
Nioh, for me at least, is going to be very hard. I’ve played the open beta and I just suffered. The games was just too hard and I knew from that moment that I’ll need many hours in order to master even the most basic moves. In some aspects it’s really good, because I know it will be very rewarding once I learn the basic mechanics and be able to beat a strong monster for the first time, and also be rewards for my amazing achievement 🙂 . Second, there is tons of loot, and I really enjoy playing games with RPG elements and in-depth progression system.
I’ve heard that advanced players will be able to play in a Twilight difficulty so advanced players can feel that they are challenged as well. I also know that if I am stuck at some point, I can always invite someone to help me out and we can play together.- I think it’s going to be really fun playing together, especially passing through difficult areas together.
So hard isn’t a bad thing, and in fact, you get a much better a sense of satisfaction that you know that you able to kill a very strong boss. I think it’s going to be a different experience compared to many of the other games that I’ve played lately.
For Honor isn’t hard as Nioh, but it does have its own skill set that you need to learn and master. For Honor is different in a way that you are going to spend most of your time in Multiplayer (there is a single-player and coop campaign by the way), fighting against real players. For Honor lacks the depth and in-depth progression system that Nioh has. I think it’s a disadvantage in that regard and I would have loved to have some sort of a progression system in PvP games as well, rather than just being able to achieve cosmetic items that doesn’t change anything in the game and are just for beauty. This is one of the reasons I spent a lot of time playing Final Fantasy XIV Realm Reborn on the PC, but I don’t have too much spare time for an MMO nowadays.
I also love being able top play 4-vs-4, the more players the better for me, because I love fighting were there are a lot of real players fighting in the same time. This is why I’m addicted to Battlefield and spent hundreds of hours playing Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 3 (mainly in Metro).
So For Honor has an advantage here in terms of its multiplayer mode, whether Nioh has a good cooperative gameplay experience and a great in-depth rewarding progression system.
To be completely honest, I really don’t like dark themed games, I love seeing bright colors in front of my eyes when I play. Hioh is really dark and quite depressing, but because the game is mostly dark, the special effects are more prominent. For honor is completely the opposite, bright, colorful and full of details. Visually For Honor just look better and just visually more appealing in my opinion (it’s completely subjective of course).
The 4-vs-4 in For Honor also incorporates NPCs that feel up the battlefield, making the whole battle feel more alive. You feel like you are a part of a great war. There are 1-vs-1 and 2-vs-2 modes as well, but that specific mode really appeals to me and reminds me a MOBA game where you need to slain grunts, which are low-health minions that spawn for each team and fight alongside it.
If I had to choose based on the visuals, I go with For Honor any day, but this is just my personal taste in visuals and although it’s important, it’s not The most important aspect of the game.
So which one should I choose?
Decisions are hard and I find it hard to choose between the two. To be honest, I already play Overwatch quite a lot and if I think that it might answer my needs for a good multiplayer game, although it’s a shooter and there is also Paladins that I can play in the close beta while it lasts. I think that it might be a good time to make a change and choose a different game and go with Nioh. I really want to play a good RPG game, I love the fact that I need to invest in it to become better and I love the looting and progression system. I think I’ll enjoy it better, but still not sure. You’ve also seen For Honor amazing features which can’t be easily ignored and this game look really amazing to play with friends.
I want to hear what you guys think? Can you help me make a decision?
