The new Year of the Rooster update is out and oh boy it looks amazing. With the new update, Blizzard also added a new Capture The Flag mode. I’ve played a few hours over the night and I just love this mode. This mode is currently available in the Arcade mode.
Year of the Rooster Skins
First of all I want to talk about the skins. The characters skins for the Year of the Rooster look amazing. The great thing is that if you are not lucky and don’t get a legendary skin or those that you want for your favorite characters, you can buy those for 3000 gold, yes, triple the amount of a regular legendary skins. Of course there are other non-legendary skins, which cost much less. From my understand, these skins will only be available during the event until February 13th. I don’t think that Blizzard will make them persist after the event, because many people buy loot boxes to get their favorite skins, and it would be odd if they will be available for infinite time. You might want to check out the official forum about that. Update: yes, you can only buy those during the event according to this blog post on playoverwatch.com.
Anyways, the skins are really beautiful, I really love the the bright Chinese outfit for Mei. There is a red one as well, but I like it less because it just reminds me of the previous winter skin which I didn’t like. I bought the Roadhog skin because he is one of my favorite characters in the game. Maybe it’s better just to play and save the money and buy the skins that you don’t get during the time of the event, I just couldn’t wait. I saved quite a lot of gold. I had around 11,000 and now I still have around 8000, so I can buy two more or even three if I get 1000 more, which is very likely if I play a lot.
The Winston skin of the Year of the Rooster is also cool and there are of course much more voices, intros, poses and other cosmetic items that you can get. I’ve read on Blizzard’s website that there are more than 100 cosmetic items, which is a lot. Of course most players want those rare legendary skins, which are harder to get from loot boxes. By the way, I’ve read somewhere in Blizzard forum that there chances of getting a legendary is around 3%. I don’t know if that’s accurate, but let’s say that I opened around 10 boxes, didn’t get even one legendary skin of the Year of the Rooster.
Capture the Flag
Capture the flag is a great new game mode, which plays completely different than the other modes. Each team has a flag that is positioned not far from its base. Each team needs to capture the enemy’s flag and bring it to where their flag is positioned. It takes a few seconds to capture the flag, so it’s not like you are going to get a tracer, blink into the flag and run a way, it doesn’t work this way. However, when you bring the enemy’s flag to your flag area, you just need to pass through it to get a point. The first team that gets three points win. Of course the round can end in draw as well.
This mode definitely requires a completely different strategic thinking, because you might want to split the team, so some will stay defending their flag and other players go and try to capture the enemy’s flag. Of course you can all go and try to capture the flag and in case the enemy captured your flag, you can try and kill him on his way back to his base.
At the top of the screen you can see a bar that shows you how far the flag is from the base. When an enemy captures the flag, his location is visible for everyone to see (in red), so you can run after him and try to take him down. If you take down a runner (the character that holds the flag), the flag will drop on the ground, and can still be picked up by the enemy team, and vice versa if it’s your flag. However, to put your flag back to the base, you need to stand near the area of the flag for a few seconds, it’s not automatic after taking down a runner.
Here’s a video of Jeff talking about this new mode, I highly recommend watching this.
So we have a great new capture the flag mode and some really cool skins to strive for. I highly recommend logging in an enjoying this time-limited event.
